After successful performances at Blue Strawberry in St.Louis and Don’t Tell Mama in NYC, I’m delighted to be traveling to Chicago and performing at Davenport’s. I sing and tell stories about the songs that “found me” for a reason, connecting with significant times and events in my life; songs that range from “The Blizzard” by Judy Collins to a tweaked version of Cole Porter’s “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.” I am fortunate to have worked with several award wining talents on this show: LIna Koutrakos as director, the late Rick Jensen for the majority of the musical direction and arrangements, Patrick DeGennaro who graciously stepped in as musical director with the untimely passing of Rick Jensen, plus additional arrangements by Beckie Menzie and Gregory Toroian. Join us for our 2nd Annual International Women’s Day 2023 Concert Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Oak Park. This all-female concert celebrates the contributions of women in the arts in song! We will premiere a new vocal quartet: “Will They Remember Life Was Beautiful?”— holding space for young lives lost to gun violence—by Mary Grace Bertulfo, lyrics and Elizabeth Doyle, composer. In addition to classic operatic gems, the concert repertoire celebrates women’s musical contributions across the globe with works by lyricists and composers Pauline Viardot Garcia, Amy Scurria, Germaine Shames, Thea Musgrave, Christine Steyer, Christina Rossetti, May Erlewine, Elaine Romanelli, and Edith Piaf. Featuring sopranos Sarah Kropski, Susan Nelson, Christine Steyer, mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna; pianists Jennifer McCabe, Shannon McGinnis; emcee Jeanne Franks & guest ensemble C21 conducted by Martha Swisher. Ann Talman is a four-time Broadway veteran. In 1981 she landed the plum role in The Little Foxes playing Elizabeth Taylor’s daughter on Broadway. They remained friends for life. The Shadow of Her Smile, is directed by Bistro and MAC Award winners, Lina Koutrakos with musical direction by Alex Rybeck. The show is an evening of story and song about Ann and Elizabeth’s amazing bond, filled with hilarious and touching stories that only Ann can tell, woven with Broadway and Great American Songbook gems. In honor of Women‘s History Month, the Indian Trails Public Library District is hosting a free performance of HERstory: The 19th Amendment and the Power of the Vote on Sunday, March 19 at 3 PM. Chicago cabaret artists Anita Kallen and Catherine Thomson celebrate – in song and HERstory – the rabble-rousing pioneers who won the right to vote for the women of America and those fighting to preserve it. With music by Sondheim, Lennon & McCartney, the Sherman Brothers, Parton, Schwartz, Porter, and others, Anita and Catherine weave in the story of women’s suffrage from second-class citizenship at the nation’s founding to the nail-biting final days in the fight for ratification of the 19th Amendment and then to present-day efforts to preserve and maximize the power of women voting. Chicago cabaret artists Catherine Thomson and Anita Kallen salute the gutsy gals who boldly defied society’s conventions - going where no woman had gone before - and achieved groundbreaking female “Firsts.” With songs by Harold Arlen, Stephen Schwartz, Dolly Parton, Tom Lehrer, Kander & Ebb, and Sara Bareilles, among others, Anita and Catherine share inspiring stories of amazing women and their trailblazing triumphs.
